Mastercard at Ginga
Mastercard behaves almost identically to Visa at the cashier, and the small differences are the ones worth knowing about: how prepaid and Maestro cards are treated, how the payout is returned, and how a Portuguese issuer's block on gambling transactions shows up. The deposit is instant from 20 €; the payout is a refund to the same card and takes three to five business days. Everything below is what we recorded testing the rail ourselves.

Depositing with a Mastercard
Choose Mastercard in the cashier, enter an amount from 20 €, and complete the strong customer authentication step your bank triggers — in Portugal that usually means approving the payment in the banking app or entering a code sent by SMS. The balance credits the moment the authorisation clears. Ginga adds no fee, and a euro card funding a euro balance moves at face value with no conversion in the middle. A debit card is the cleaner instrument here: several credit card issuers treat a gambling deposit as a cash advance, which means a handling charge and interest from the first day rather than from the statement date.
Prepaid Mastercard and Maestro cards are the two that misbehave. A prepaid card often lacks the 3-D Secure enrolment the payment needs, and Maestro numbers are not always accepted by the processor at all. If either fails, nothing is wrong with your account — the card simply is not usable on this rail, and the alternatives in the bank transfer guide or a prepaid voucher will do the same job.
Withdrawing to your Mastercard
The minimum withdrawal is 20 €. After the operator's review, which takes up to 24 hours, the payout is normally returned to the card that funded the balance rather than sent as a new payment. Card scheme rules across the EU require it, so the money cannot be redirected to a different card, and the three-to-five-business-day wait is the time it spends travelling back through the acquiring bank and your issuer. Weekends and Portuguese public holidays are not counted, and the credit sometimes appears on the statement dated to the original deposit rather than to the day it arrived.
That makes cards the slowest exit at Ginga by a wide margin. Skrill paid out in one to two hours in our tests and crypto inside 24 hours including weekends. If speed matters, the practical move is to keep the card for deposits and nominate a faster verified method for payouts where the operator allows it — how to withdraw at Ginga explains when that substitution is possible. Verification asks for a citizen card or passport, a proof of address under three months old, and a photo of the card showing your name and the last four digits with the middle ones covered.
If the transaction is blocked
A number of Portuguese banks decline gambling merchant category codes as a matter of policy, and the refusal reaches you as a bare error message. Retrying the same card repeatedly can trigger a temporary security lock, so stop after the second attempt. The three workable responses are: contact your bank and ask whether the restriction can be removed from your card, some issuers will do it on request; use a card from a different bank; or leave the card schemes behind altogether with Trustly, MB WAY or a Multibanco reference, none of which involve a merchant code your issuer can object to.
Who should use Mastercard here
It suits players who deposit modest amounts, value the familiarity of a card, and treat a payout as something that arrives next week rather than tonight. It suits nobody who is chasing a fast cashout, and it cannot be used with a card in another person's name — third-party payments are rejected and reversed. Weigh it against the other rails on the payments hub before you commit a first deposit.
